Department Information
Mathematics is an area of knowledge that includes the science of numbers, quantity, patterns, and encompasses the craft of creating new knowledge by using deductive logic and abstraction. As stated in the curriculum guide to majors in the mathematical sciences, “Mathematics is an essential tool in science, technology, business, and elsewhere. At its core, mathematics is a way of thinking that enriches all human activity, even where mathematical content does not explicitly appear. Majoring in mathematics is preparation for life, regardless of one’s intended career.”

Graduates from our programs are teachers and professionals in business, industry, and government. CWU mathematics majors learn to analyze complex situations, solve problems, and communicate their results to a broad audience. To this end, the mathematics curriculum includes theoretical and applied courses, opportunities for mathematical computing and undergraduate research, and courses designed to prepare individuals pursuing certification in middle or high school mathematics teaching. Students are also supported with additional extracurricular programs including the Math Club, Actuarial Science Club, Teach STEM Club, mathematical outreach opportunities, and the Mount Stuart mathematics seminar.

Planning Your Degree
All future majors must meet with a departmental advisor to map out a graduation plan and should continue to meet with the advisor to map out course and career plans.  Most upper-level mathematics courses are offered at most once per year, and so meeting with an advisor is crucial to set up the most efficient graduation plan and to avoid delayed graduation.

Mathematics Honors Certificate
The Mathematical Honors Program is a program for mathematically enthusiastic students who are looking for extended opportunities to engage in studying more mathematical topics than are currently covered in the required coursework. The program includes a mathematical course curriculum and additional experiences for students who want to graduate with honors. The mathematical honors curriculum is composed of a series of seminars that explore how mathematics, humanities, sciences, and social sciences converge to investigate and answer important questions. There are both lower and upper division honors courses, with varying topics each quarter. To graduate with mathematical honors, students participate in these seminars and complete a culminating research or creative project. In addition, students engage in mathematical and science outreach experiences in which they practice communicating mathematics to the broader community.

Course Offerings
Frequency of course offering information can be found at the department website: https://www.cwu.edu/academics/math/ or by contacting the department directly. Most upper-level mathematics courses are offered at most once per year.
