Sport Coaching Certificate


The Sport Coaching Certificate will provide students with a foundation of knowledge that will be beneficial upon entering the coaching profession. Typically, students who complete this certificate enter the coaching field at the youth or high school levels, either in paid positions or as volunteers.

Admission Requirements
Students wishing to declare for the Sport Coaching Certificate will need to meet with the Sport Coaching Program Coordinator for purposes of an advising meeting.

Graduation Requirements
Students must achieve a letter grade of C or higher for each of the courses in the program.

Program Learner Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Articulate a personal coaching philosophy that supports the purpose and value of sport experiences for children and youth.
  • Recognize differences in coaching objectives and coaching styles, and compare and contrast how differences in communication skills impact sport coaching environments.
  • Articulate the purposes and functions of a “code of ethics,” and construct a code of ethics for a sport team.
  • Evaluate the relationship between ethics and competition.
  • Identify how historical variations exist in the ways that sports have been organized and played in the U.S. and other societies, and how sports have institutionalized social and cultural practices diversely in different countries.
  • Explain and demonstrate teaching techniques pertinent to all phases of a chosen competitive sport.
  • Design and implement a pedagogical model for use in teaching skill progressions in the players of a chosen sport.
