Actuarial Science Minor: Mathematical Statistics

The minor in Actuarial Science: Mathematical Statistics is designed to prepare students in the mathematics and statistics content areas necessary for success in the actuarial profession. By combining training in probability theory and statistical inferences, students will be able contribute to decision-making processes across numerous disciplines. Upon completion of this minor, students will be prepared to take Society of Actuaries (SOA) Probability (P) Exam and will satisfy the SOA’s Validation by Educational Experience (VEE) credit in Mathematical Statistics upon getting B- or higher in several courses. This minor is not open to students majoring in Actuarial Science or the Statistical Data Science specialization of the Data Science major.

Graduation Requirements
All courses in the minor must be completed with grades of C or higher.

Program Learner Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Apply concepts and tools from probability theory to solve actuarial problems;
  • Demonstrate and identify a conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, strategic competence, adaptive reasoning, and productive dispositions in the mathematical areas of statistical methods.

Select one of the following statistics courses for five credits.
