The Master of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences Education Initial Certification is an online program that prepares students to plan curriculum for teaching, create a physical and psychological environment for learning, engage students in the learning process, examine the relationship of diverse groups and the educational process, analyze the historical and philosophical underpinnings of family and consumer sciences, assume professional responsibilities, and apply research to practice.

Once admitted, students will work with their advisor to determine the appropriate program options. The program is offered in conjunction with Innovative Digital Education Alliance (IDEA). IDEA is an academic alliance that offers fully-online graduate programs in high-demand professional fields.

Teacher Endorsement
This degree satisfies the criteria for a teaching endorsement in Family and Consumer Sciences, qualifying students to teach a wide variety of courses including leadership, child development, housing, foods, fashion, finance, and more, at the high school, middle school, or junior high levels. Students who successfully complete this degree are eligible to apply for Washington state teacher certification and Career and Technical Education (CTE) certification. In addition to completing graduation requirements, students must meet all Washington state teacher certification requirements.

Students may also need additional courses within the five content areas:1) Family Economics/Consumer 2) Housing 3) Foods and Nutrition 4) Clothing and Textiles and 5) Family Relationships/Child Development to satisfy the endorsement requirement. 

Admission Requirements
Admission to the Program through Office of Graduate Studies and Research and Applied to the Teacher Certification Program.

Program Requirements
Completion of at least 45 credits outlined on approved course of study filed with the Office of Graduate Studies and Research and credits within the five content areas for the endorsement requirements.

Program Learner Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Evaluate the principles and mission of Family and Consumer Sciences within secondary education.
  • Create curriculum and lesson plans, student engagement, teaching strategies, models and methods, and differentiation related to teaching diverse students.
  • Recognize, align, and implement the National Standards for teachers of FCS.
  • Construct an occupational program in family and consumer sciences.
  • Execute success teaching of Family and Consumer Sciences concepts, respect and abide by the ethical and professional standards required for certification and/or professional growth.
