The Department of Sport and Movement Studies at CWU offers a Master of Science in Health and Physical Education, designed to enhance the knowledge and skills necessary to be an effective teacher in school health and physical education. The fully-online format is designed to meet the needs of professionals working in the educational field.
Although many applicants who enroll in the program already hold a teaching certification in health and physical education, those that do not have the endorsement may enroll to acquire the knowledge and skills to effectively teach health and PE as the program meets the academic requirements established by the Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction leading to certification in the endorsement area of Health and Fitness.
Admission Requirements
Applicants for the Master of Science in Health and Physical Education program are expected to meet the admission requirements of the School of Graduate Studies, and must have completed a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university (academic transcripts to be submitted).
Applicants must submit a copy of a valid teaching certification in Health/Physical Education or another endorsement area, or provide evidence of extensive related practical experience.

Graduation Requirements
All graduate students are required to maintain a minimum of a 3.00 cumulative grade point average in order to graduate with a master’s degree from Central Washington University.
Registered courses must be completed by the last day of the current quarter.
Program Learner Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:
- synthesize research to support practical initiatives and solve real-world problems relating to health and physical education;
- analyze a variety of curricular models, instructional models, and teaching styles that are aligned with the state and national standards in health and physical education;
- plan units and lessons that incorporate research-based practices of effective teaching in health and physical education;
- evaluate a variety of content and pedagogical practices that meet developmental appropriateness in health and physical education; and
- design lessons that integrate current technological applications and grant writing practices in health and physical education.
