STEM Education Foundations Minor


This minor is intended for students who want a background in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education but do not want to complete the requirements for teaching certification and endorsement. This background provides a basis for working in settings such as informal science or STEM education, tutoring, curriculum review and development, STEM outreach, etc. This minor does not lead to teaching certification, which is required for working as a K-12 public-school teacher.  

Students seeking teaching certification and endorsement in any of the middle level or secondary STEM fields must complete the STEM Teaching Program, BA degree and Teacher Certification requirements or an equivalent Professional Education Program. 

Admission Requirements
Grade of C or higher in STP 201 and 202 OR STP 300 OR equivalent course.

Graduation Requirements
Students must achieve a grade of C or higher in all courses in the minor and have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher in the minor in order to graduate with this minor degree.

Program Requirements
Fingerprint Clearance - Candidates must have valid WSP and FBI fingerprint clearance in order to complete any course that requires the candidate to be working with P-12th grade children on or off campus. The fingerprint clearance must be valid through the duration of the course. Fingerprint clearance must appear in the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) Fingerprinting Database to be accepted. 

Liability Insurance - Liability insurance is also required by the state of Washington to work with P-12 students. Liability insurance must be purchased annually and can be done so through CWU’s Office of Field Experiences.

Program Learner Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • apply STEM content knowledge and discipline-based conventions to create engaging and inclusive learning experiences; 
  • plan culturally responsive instruction that responds to learning needs;
  • employ instructional strategies promote student content knowledge, skills development, and real-world application; and
  • design multiple assessments to guide teaching and learning.
