The study of literature trains students in reflective reading, theoretically based inquiry, critical analysis, and effective verbal and written expression. Students are taught to analyze literary works as representations of literary genres and in historical and cultural contexts as well as to examine literary influence and explore literature through the lens of critical theory. Majors are expected to complete English 302 and English 303 during their first quarter in the major.
Program Learner Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:
- analyze how literature is contextualized historically,
- evaluate texts from a range of literary perspectives, conventions, and forms,
- analyze how literature is contextualized culturally,
- compose written work that successfully meets the rhetorical needs of situations requiring the application of a variety of genres and styles,
- apply literary critical theories to the analysis of a variety of texts,
- demonstrate proficiency in literary research methodologies, and
- demonstrate the functional use of grammar and linguistics.

Select 10 credits of English literature, language, writing, or film studies. Elective credits may be taken from any English literature, language, writing, or film studies course at the 300 level or above. At least 2 credits of practicum must be taken from the course list below. No more than 5 credits of film studies may be counted as elective credits in the English language and literature major. One 200-level course (up to 5 credits) may be counted as an elective.
