COM 473 - Crisis Communication Management


Description:
Crisis communication management is concerned with all of an organization’s stakeholders and the multifaceted way in which an organization communicates (customers, investors, employees, etc.). COM 473 and COM 573 are layered courses; students may not receive credit for both.

Prerequisites:
Prerequisites: admission to the communication studies major; public relations major or minor; sport management, sports communication specialization; or instructor permission.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify various types of public relations and communication crises
  • Apply communication theories and practices to crisis responses
  • Analyze the practice of public relations within the context of crisis communication
  • Assess effective crisis communication applied for organizations in the private and public sectors
  • Develop communication strategies for a crisis communication plan to manage an organization’s reputation
  • Assess ethical and cultural considerations regarding crisis communication (Graduate level)
  • Create media relations tactics for a crisis communication response (Graduate level)
