COM 302 - Intercultural Communication


Description:
The objective of this course is to give the participants the skills and understanding necessary to improve communication with peoples of other nations and cultures.

Prerequisites:
Prerequisite: sophomore standing or above.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify how culture, and related social and psychological factors, influence communication.
  • Compare and contrast cultural similarities and differences in communication behavior.
  • Analyze ethical issues in communicating with people from different culture/ethnic groups.
  • Develop self-awareness and intercultural sensitivity.
  • Define key concepts in relation to the study of Antiracism, Diversity, and inclusivity including antiracism, racism, race, ethnicity, discrimination, privilege, diversity, equity, inclusivity, and intersectionality.
  • Analyze the role of race, racism, and antiracism in the Unites States.
  • Describe intersections across race, ethnicity and other minoritized identities.
  • Explain systematic and structural mechanisms that perpetuate both privilege and inequities.
  • Compare and contrast their own core values, assumptions, and biases with those held by other individuals, cultures, or societies.
