AST 378 - Islam and Asia Description: Explores the diverse cultural, religious, social, and political contexts that influenced the establishment and development of Islam in Asia, engaging discussions about gender, Islamophobia, and anti-Asianism in the world. AST 378, HIST 378, and RELS 378 are cross-listed courses; students may only receive credit for one. This course satisfies CWU’s ADI graduation requirement.

Learner Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- examine and evaluate ideas and arguments concerning religious and historical development of Islam in Asia,
- analyze and synthesize various types of primary and secondary sources in order to put forward well-supported arguments concerning Islam and its relationship to Asia,
- write clear arguments on Islam, Islamophobia, and their relationships to perceptions about Asia,
- identify and describe key events, places, persons, movements, and concepts in Islam in Asia,
- explain the complex relationship between Islamic movements and historical changes in Asia, as well as between Islamophobia and Anti-Asianism in the West,
- define key concepts in relation to the study of Antiracism, Diversity, and Inclusivity including antiracism, racism, race, ethnicity, discrimination, privilege, diversity, equity, inclusivity, and intersectionality,
- analyze the role of race, racism, and antiracism in the United States,
- describe intersections between race and ethnicity and other minoritized identities,
- explain systematic and structural mechanisms that perpetuate both privilege and inequities, and
- compare and contrast their own core values, assumptions, and biases with those held by other individuals, cultures, or societies.
