ENG 518 - Advanced Literary and Critical Theory


Description:
Advanced study of the theory and practice of various critical perspectives and strategies as they inform the study of literary texts. ENG 418 and ENG 518 are layered courses; students may not receive credit for both.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: Recognize and critique the argument underlying critical writings. Explain the basic premises of selected theories. Apply selected theories to specific literary works. Write formal and informal responses to literary and critical theory that demonstrate engagement, effective inquiry, and reflective thought Examine at least one theory or theorist in depth. Evaluate the critical approaches and their theoretical assumptions by way of developing their own critical orientation as literary scholars and critics
