EDU 532 - Multicultural Education for Equity, Access and Social Justice


Description:
Examines educational policy, practice, and materials informed by multiculturalism, social justice theory and praxis. Investigates ways in which discrimination influences schools and educational access and identifies ways to ensure all students have equitable educational opportunities.

Prerequisites:
Prerequisite: admitted to the Teacher Certification MAT Program and successfully completed: EDU 551 and EDU 561 and (EDU 531 and the Secondary and K-12 Specialization) or (EDSE 531 and the Special Education Specialization).

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify social justice concepts and ideas and their relationship to contemporary multicultural and/or multicultural education issues
  • Cultivate a list of community resources that support social justice themes for schools and community.
  • Identify and summarize theories of social justice, social oppression and liberation from different traditions and disciplinary perspectives and positionalities
  • Examine the impact of pedagogical and curricular decisions on students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Evaluate best practices, challenges, and current research on diverse learners
  • Evaluate personal values, assumptions, learning styles, and teaching styles, and how these affect the learning environment for all students
  • Develop knowledge of conceptual foundations and create curriculum rooted in social justice education.
