COM 552 - Media Representations of Disability


Description:
Analyze the representation of personal ability and appearance in various media and its influence on identity, culture, and careers. ASP 452, COM 452, ASP 552, COM 552 are cross-listed/ layered courses; a student may only receive credit for one.

Prerequisite: graduate standing.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: Identify issues of accessibility regarding identity and functions of independent and integrated living. Use theory and research to analyze representation of disability. Identify the use of disability for different narrative purposes in a variety of fiction and nonfiction media products. Recognize patterns of representation across a variety of media. Explain disability as a cultural identity subject to marginalization. Summarize literature on topics of media portrayals of disability.
