BIOL 510 - Science of Learning

Description:
Integrated study of biology and behavior in human learning. Exploration of brain structure/function, neural circuitry, molecular basis of memory, and critical thinking skills development. Focus on how to improve learning. Four hours lecture/lab per week. BIOL 410 and BIOL 510 are layered courses; students may not receive credit for both.

Credits: (4)

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Develop critical thinking skills and mindsets.
  • Analyze how human evolutionary adaptations enabled a cognitive revolution.
  • Apply brain structure and function to learning behavior.
  • Diagram how neural circuitry enables association and specificity.
  • Compare molecular mechanisms that underlie memory formation and long-term potentiation.
  • Differentiate effects of plasticity, stress, emotion, and environment on learning.
  • Evaluate scientific, economic, social, and ethical consequences of learning in modern society. Infer relationships between learning deficits, communication, and societal problems.
  • Construct a supported argument and defend multiple advocacy positions.
  • Apply knowledge of cognitive science and critical thinking to improve personal learning efficacy. Inform biological and behavioral perspectives using brain and learning primary research. (Grad Level)
