BIOL 510 - Science of Learning

Description:
Integrated study of biology and behavior in human learning. Exploration of brain structure/function, neural circuitry, molecular basis of memory, and critical thinking skills development. Focus on how to improve learning. Four hours lecture/lab per week. BIOL 410 and BIOL 510 are layered courses; students may not receive credit for both.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Develop critical thinking skills and mindsets.
Analyze how human evolutionary adaptations enabled a cognitive revolution.
Apply brain structure and function to learning behavior.
Diagram how neural circuitry enables association and specificity.
Compare molecular mechanisms that underlie memory formation and long-term potentiation.
Differentiate effects of plasticity, stress, emotion, and environment on learning.
Evaluate scientific, economic, social, and ethical consequences of learning in modern society. Infer relationships between learning deficits, communication, and societal problems.
Construct a supported argument and defend multiple advocacy positions.
Apply knowledge of cognitive science and critical thinking to improve personal learning efficacy. Inform biological and behavioral perspectives using brain and learning primary research. (Grad Level)
