ASP 552 - Media Representations of Disability


Description:
Analyze the representation of personal ability and appearance in various media and its influence on identity, culture, and careers. ASP 452, COM 452, ASP 552, COM 552 are cross-listed/ layered courses; a student may only receive credit for one.

Prerequisites:
Prerequisite: graduate standing.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • identify issues of accessibility regarding identity and functions of independent and integrated living;
  • use theory and research to analyze representation of disability;
  • identify the use of disability for different narrative purposes in a variety of fiction and nonfiction media products;
  • recognize patterns of representation across a variety of media;
  • explain disability as a cultural identity subject to marginalization; and
  • summarize literature on topics of media portrayals of disability.
