ASP 525 - Universal Design

Description:
Proactive accessibility design for high incidence problems in commercial, leisure, occupational, and personal living spaces. Assistive technology, adapted architecture, differentiated activity. Standards for safety and equity. Legal precedents. Universal design for learning. ASP 425 and ASP 525 are layered courses; a student may not receive credit for both.

Prerequisite: admission to the Accessibility Studies Graduate Certificate Program or permission of the program director.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

evaluate environmental, social, and cultural barriers to full participation by people of all abilities;
apply principles of universal design and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards in real world contexts;
analyze the usability of environments and products by people of all abilities according to a universal design framework and ADA standards;
develop practical design solutions based on universal design principles and ADA standards for access issues in a variety of environments;
evaluate agents responsible for implementing and maintaining accessible environments and programs;
analyze the advantage for individuals and society of minimizing barriers by implementing principles of universal design to different audiences with different motives (e.g., social justice and risk management); and
communicate professionally and accessibly.
