ABS 310 - Black Social Media


Description:
This course critically examines the origins, dynamics, and activist nature of Black social media and how Black social media writers problematize discourses and practices of racial identity across different platforms, such as Twitter and TikTok.

Prerequisites:
Prerequisite: satisfaction of the General Education K1: Academic Writing II requirement.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Analyze the major themes of Black social media and its impact on perceptions of blackness.
  • Examine the histories of race, technology, and social media as it relates to Black social media foundations.
  • Compare the activist responses of Black social media writers relative to gender, ability, sexuality, or class.
  • Synthesize key theories of racialization, protest, activism, and social justice present in Black social media.
  • Analyze the relationship between Black social media spaces (Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, TikTok, etc.) and their use as socio-political sites of oppression, resistance, and empowerment.
