ABS 400 - Afrofuturism Description: Afrofuturism explores past and present African diasporas with scientific and technological possibilities and how Afrofuturist authors problematize discourses and practices of racial identity across different mediums, while offering alternative narratives rooted in black liberation/futurism.
Prerequisites: Prerequisite: a minimum of 4 credits of ABS prefixed courses (including ABS 184).

Learner Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain the concept of Afrofuturism and its creative expression of the Black liberation/justice struggle.
- Compare the primary symbols, themes, and expressive patterns in Afrofuturist texts across multiple media platforms.
- Differentiate the cultural, historical, and political contexts in which various Afrofuturist narratives have been produced.
- Analyze the relationship between Afrofuturism and interrelated ideas of history, futurity, technology, ecology, disability, gender, race, utopia, and the nation.
- Synthesize the scholarly conversations of racism, colonialism, and genocide that drive Afrofuturism’s experimental aesthetics.
- Apply Afrofuturist concepts and aesthetics to produce a final culminating project grounded in academic research, creative expression, African history, and African mythology.
