ETS 309 - Race and Sports


Description:
This course takes an intersectional approach to examine race, politics, and sports in American culture and the lived experiences of athletes of color, especially Black and African American athletes. ABS 309 and ETS 309 are cross-listed courses; a student may not receive credit for both. This course satisfies CWU’s ADI graduation requirement.

Prerequisites:
Prerequisite: satisfaction of the General Education K1: Academic Writing II requirement.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the impact and commodification of athletes of color in collegiate and professional sports, especially Black and African American athletes.
  • Compare the different yet overlapping experiences of athletes of color in U.S. sports, such as Black, LatinX, Asian, and Indigenous athletes.
  • Delineate how athletes of color have used sports as a vehicle for protest, assimilation, and social mobility.
  • Analyze how sports shape and reinforce definitions of race, gender, sexuality, and social status in American society.
  • Engage in scholarly discussion about the racial experiences of athletes of color and the ways that race, politics, and sports are interconnected.
