GERM 200 - Introduction to German Culture Description: The course examines major events, social movements, and cultural debates that situate contemporary German culture in historical global perspectives.

Learner Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify and analyze selected cultural and social issues in German society in the 20th and 21st centuries. Critically interpret patterns in cultural and social developments over time and explore value of systematic cultural analysis.
- Examine German society and culture post-reunification through selected cultural artifacts representing diverse perspectives on current issues, such as EU integration, globalization, and immigration among others. Use different interpretive models to interpret current events.
- Demonstrate understanding of complex socioeconomic, cultural, and political conditions that were in place for totalitarianism to take hold in Germany in the first half of the 20th c. Recognize and identify practices of effective resistance, community building, and politics of memory in post-WWII Germany (East and West).
- Compare and contrast local and global perceptions and articulations of selected issues of community and identity in German society and culture through history. Relate the selected issues to questions of community and identity in the U.S.
- Demonstrate knowledge of Cultural Studies interdisciplinary methods. Interpret current local-to-global issues in contemporary Germany through application of these methods
