COM 494 - Teaching Communication

Description:
Experiential learning of the fundamentals of teaching communication in higher education. Permission of department. May be repeated up to 4 credits.

Prerequisites:
Prerequisite: completion of course in which teaching or assisting is to be done and approval of department chair.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Recall and use key vocabulary used in academic teaching settings.
Execute basic tasks of academic instruction such as finding source material, evaluating exams and papers, leading discussion groups, and explaining concepts to students.
Effectively use the key features of a course management system (Canvas, Blackboard, etc.) such as publishing/unpublishing content, populating modules, uploading files, publishing class announcements, using internal email services, grading with a rubric, and entering grades.
Summarize the principles of the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act, FERPA.
