Introduction to sociocultural research methods in the framework of Rapid Ethnographic Assessment. Includes principles and techniques for ethnographic interviewing and observation, field notes and data analysis. For majors, minors, non-majors and professionals.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: 

  • Demonstrate knowledge of key concepts, principles, and methods of sociocultural research and Rapid Ethnographic Assessment.
  • Propose appropriate methods and sampling strategies for data collection.
  • Prepare interview questions; practice conducting, transcribing and coding interviews.
  • Plan and practice ethnographic observation and mapping.
  • Analyze qualitative data thematically.
  • Evaluate ethical issues in sociocultural research.
