ENG 329 - Cultural Studies in Literature Description: This course introduces students to methods for analyzing literary approaches to power differentials in cultures, the ways that sociopolitical contexts inform literary works, and the interactions between literary studies and cultural practices across the globe. May be repeated up to 10 credits under a different subtopic with instructor permission. This course satisfies CWU’s ADI graduation requirement.
Prerequisites: Prerequisites: sophomore standing or above and Academic Writing II with a grade of C- or higher.

Learner Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Define key concepts in relation to the study of Antiracism, Diversity, and Inclusivity including antiracism, racism, race, ethnicity, discrimination, privilege, diversity, equity, inclusivity, and intersectionality.
- Analyze the role of race, racism, and antiracism in the United States.
- Describe intersections between race and ethnicity and other minoritized identities.
- Explain systematic and structural mechanisms that perpetuate both privilege and inequities.
- Compare and contrast your own core values, assumptions, and biases with those held by other individuals, cultures, or societies.
- Explain how cultural identity intersects with other identity positions like race, gender, disability, class, nationhood, and citizenship as expressed in texts and critical theory.
- Evaluate how texts interact with significant social and cultural movements.
- Analyze the way that narratives address and redefine cultural identity and norms in particular global contexts, diverse cultures, and specific eras.
- Formulate through interdisciplinary approaches, arguments that convey a knowledge of the foundational language of cultural criticism and power differentials as they apply to textual analysis
