ENG 337 - LGBTQ2IA+ Literatures and Cultures


Description:
This course investigates gender and sexuality in literature with a particular focus on LGBTQ2IA+ writers and communities, and explores the relationship between LGBTQ2IA+ literature, queer theory, and social movements. ENG 337 and WGSS 337 are cross-listed courses; students may not receive credit for both. This course satisfies CWU’s ADI graduation requirement.

Prerequisites:
Prerequisites: sophomore standing or above and Academic Writing II with a grade of C- or higher.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Define key concepts in relation to the study of Antiracism, Diversity, and Inclusivity including antiracism, racism, race, ethnicity, discrimination, privilege, diversity, equity, inclusivity, and intersectionality.
  • Analyze the role of race, racism, and antiracism in the United States.
  • Describe intersections between race and ethnicity and other minoritized identities.
  • Explain systematic and structural mechanisms that perpetuate both privilege and inequities.
  • Compare and contrast your own core values, assumptions, and biases with those held by other individuals, cultures, or societies.
  • Analyze how minoritized genders and sexualities intersect with other problematics like race, disability, class, citizenship, and nationhood, as expressed in LGBTQ2IA+ narratives and queer theory.
  • Explain how LGBTQ2IA+ texts have formed from such topics as: queer love, the relationship between gender and identity, the fight for rights and representation, and discrimination based on gender, sexuality, and intersecting minoritized identities, including race.
  • Construct arguments about foundational concepts, major themes, and terms in queer studies, gender studies, and LGBTQ2IA+ cultural conversations.
  • Discuss how texts by LGBTQ2IA+ authors address significant political and sociocultural movements and events.
