CDFS 417 - Pediatric Diagnoses and Medical Terminology Description: Understanding of common pediatric diseases and diagnoses, medical terminology, childhood hospitalization, corrective pediatric care, hospital technology, and medical documentation relevant to work as a child life specialist. Formerly FCL/FS 417, students may not receive credit for both. CDFS 417 and CDFS 517 are layered courses; students may not receive credit for both.
Prerequisites: Prerequisites: CDFS 232 and admittance to a Child Development and Family Science major or minor.

Learner Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe common childhood diseases, disorders, and treatment protocols using medical terminology.
- Identify childhood diseases and disorders and the impact they have on children and their families
- Interpret and draft hospital documentation.
- Prepare step-by-step coping plans to support children and families with common childhood diseases.
- Synthesize current research related to child life and childhood diseases and summarize how it informs child life practice.
