ART 420 - Art and Architecture of the United States


Description:
A study of art and architecture of the United States in the 20th century. Students interrogate the idea of “America,” and explore how art institutions perpetuate both privilege and inequities in the art historical canon. This course satisfies CWU’s ADI graduation requirement.

Prerequisites:
Prerequisite: junior standing or higher.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • distinguish and analyze the variety of techniques and formal visual elements of individual works of art in different media,
  • evaluate and interpret various works of art in relation to the context and historical background in which they were created,
  • identify, define and differentiate the various styles that most clearly express the ideals and values of American society in the twentieth century,
  • synthesize, summarize and assess information from a variety of sources regarding concepts that define and distinguish the movements and traditions in art of the United States,
  • define key concepts in relation to the study of Antiracism, Diversity, and inclusivity including antiracism, racism, race, ethnicity, discrimination, privilege, diversity, equity, inclusivity, and intersectionality,
  • analyze the role of race, racism, and antiracism in the Unites States,
  • describe intersections between race and ethnicity and other minoritized identities,
  • explain systematic and structural mechanisms that perpetuate both privilege and inequities, and
  • compare and contrast their own core values, assumptions, and biases with those held by other individuals, cultures, or societies.
