GEOL 370 - Sedimentology and Stratigraphy Description: Origin of sedimentary rocks, physical processes and stratigraphic principles. Identification of sedimentary rocks. Recognition of depositional environments represented in the geologic record. Field trip required.
Prerequisites: Prerequisite: GEOL 203; Pre or Co-requisite: GEOL 210, and (PHYS 121 or PHYS 181 or admission to the Geology, BA).
Credits: (5) Contact Hours: 4 hours lecture; 3 hour lab
Learner Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- predict and explain affiliations between common sedimentary rock-types and sedimentary structures,
- draw, read, and interpret stratigraphic sections,
- explain and apply the basic principles of stratigraphic correlation, including applying Walther’s Law to standard stratigraphic sections, and
- apply the scientific method to questions in sedimentology/stratigraphy.
