ENG 430 - Teaching Writing in the Secondary School Description: Seminar on teaching writing. Emphasizes practice in writing process strategies, content pedagogy, instructional planning, best practices, assessment, and standards-based instruction. Teacher candidates prepare to implement the Common Core State Standards/WA K-12 ELA Learning Standards.
Prerequisites: Prerequisites: EFC 340 and 28 credits of ENG courses, and full admission to the Teacher Certification Program.

Learner Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- apply Washington State English Language Arts (ELA) Endorsement Competencies to plan and teach ELA content, concepts, and methods of inquiry,
- apply a range of assessment tools and practices to inform instruction and assess learning,
- apply strategies that help students master the grammar of Standard American English,
- apply strategies for differentiating ELA instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners,
- create learning experiences that enable learners to write effectively for a variety of audiences and purposes, including informational and persuasive text,
- utilize instructional strategies that facilitate student mastery of the conventions of spelling, capitalization, punctuation, proper word usage and grammatical sentence structure, and
- design instruction that enables students to analyze and evaluate a wide range of informational and persuasive texts.
