ENG 422 - Teaching Young Adult Literature


Description:
Course focuses on the study of literature written for middle-level and high-school students. Teacher candidates analyze literature from multiple time periods and cultures, and develop comprehensive, creative, and insightful approaches to teaching young adult literature.

Prerequisites:
Prerequisites: EFC 340, PSY 314, ENG 302, and ENG 303.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • analyze a broad range of award-winning texts written specifically for young adult readers in multiple genres, including novels, short stories, poetry, and essays, and a range of multicultural literature,
  • create learning experiences to engage students in the analysis of how literary elements such as plot, character, theme, setting, tone, point of view, and figurative language relate to literary meaning in texts for adolescents,
  • apply strategies for teaching young adult literature that engage students (orally, visually, and in writing) in interpreting, evaluating, and responding critically to print and non-print texts,
  • evaluate the contributions of current and past authors to young adult literature,
  • analyze current issues regarding the writing, reading, and study of adolescent literature,
  • examine and reference professional literature from periodicals related to the field of young adult literature, and
  • apply instructional strategies for teaching literary texts, providing both male and female representation and authorship.
