ENG 222 - Multicultural Literature for Teachers


Description:
Teacher candidates read and respond to various genres of multicultural and world literature, developing methods for teaching texts that invite middle and high school students to think critically and use evidence to support their viewpoints.

Prerequisites:
Prerequisites: Academic Writing I, Academic Writing II, and admission to the English Language Arts Teaching major. Course requires prior application to the Teacher Certification Program.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • analyze works representing and authored by a broad range of cultures and ethnicities,
  • apply strategies for planning and teaching a wide range of literary works authored by a broad range of cultures and ethnicities,
  • examine multicultural literary works of various genres - including poetry, fiction, essays, and films,
  • apply strategies for planning and teaching literary elements such as plot, character, theme, setting, tone, and figurative language related to literary meaning in a text,
  • compose essays that demonstrate the ability to read closely, interpret effectively, analyze, and synthesize literary works in their cultural contexts,
  • create and present lesson plans for modeling higher level thinking skills and scaffolding metacognitive processes for a wide variety of literary tasks related to multicultural themes, such as Gender and Identity, Race and Difference, and Individualism and Community,
  • apply instructional strategies that help students analyze the historical, social, cultural, and political context and influences of literary texts, and
  • discuss issues of race, ethnicity, gender identity, and culture in literature.
