COM 444 - The Observer Description: Reporting and writing, photo assignments and copy editing for the student-run campus newspaper and news website. In editorial positions: plan and produce the newspaper. May be repeated up to 24 credits.

Learner Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Research and generate story ideas and develop angles pertinent to an audience of CWU students, faculty and staff.
- Work in a deadline-driven environment.
- Write basic news and feature stories, including effective leads, nut grafts, basic story elements and basic story structures.
- Employ professional codes of ethics when dealing with ethical dilemmas pertaining to gathering and reporting news.
- For students who have roles of editors only: Organize news story “play” (position, prominence, copy space, etc.) in the newspaper.
- For students who have roles of editors only: Plan the production of a weekly newspaper in hard copy, online format, or both.
- For students who have roles of editors only: Produce a weekly newspaper in hard copy, online format, or both.
- For students who have roles of editors only: Mentor and train reporters.
