COM 446 - PULSE magazine Description: Gather, write, report and design features and other articles for PULSE magazine, the quarterly student-written and student-run magazine. In editorial positions: plan and produce PULSE magazine. May be repeated up to 24 credits.
Credits: (3-6)
Learner Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Use magazine industry terminology, and deconstruct the composition, format and style of magazines and magazine articles.
- Generate workable story ideas for a magazine.
- Use best practices for reporting, writing, photographing and/or designing magazine stories through workshops and practice.
- Work in a deadline-driven environment.
- Promote a magazine for its target audience.
- Employ professional code of ethics when dealing with ethical dilemmas pertaining to gathering and reporting news.
- For students who have roles of editors only: Organize story “play” (position, prominence, copy space, etc.) in the magazine.
- For students who have roles of editors only: Plan the production of a quarterly or bi-quarterly magazine in hard copy, online format, or both.
- For students who have roles of editors only: Produce a quarterly or bi-quarterly magazine in hard copy, online format, or both.
- For students who have roles of editors only: Mentor and train reporters.
