Students will receive an introduction to writing and reporting of journalistic stories for online and print media.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Describe the variety of ways newsrooms structure their coverage and deploy their staff.
Write news stories with effective leads, nut graphs and story structure.
Find ideas for news stories.
Interview sources.
Use observation to gather information.
Collect appropriate documents to inform news stories.
Identify the qualities and values that make events and trends newsworthy and the factors that determine the “play” of a story in a media outlet.
Summarize the ethical standards and guidelines set by professional news organizations.
