ANTH 425 - Zooarchaeology


Description:
Mammalian osteology and methods in the analysis of animal bones from archaeological sites. Meets anthropology subfield Archaeology (A).

Prerequisites:
Prerequisites: ANTH 120 and either (ANTH 110 or BIOL 183).

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: 

  • Demonstrate understanding of basic techniques for measuring and quantifying faunal data
  • Propose, design and conduct an individual hands-on zooarchaeology project
  • Summarize and synthesize individual project methods, results, and broader context
  • Predict likely element, taxonomic identity, and taphonomic history of bone specimens on the basis of their morphometric characteristic
  • Assess alternative interpretations of buried bone assemblages
