Learner Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- examine and identify African American cultural traditions as they are expressed through literature, oral tradition, art, food, and performance;
- explain the development of African American artistic culture from its origins in Africa through its adaptations and transformations in the United States;
- examine ways in which linguistic, religious, philosophical, and historical circumstances have shaped both Black identity and Black art;
- demonstrate the role and reality of joy and celebration in African American artistic culture; and
- identify methods African Americans use to advocate for social justice through artistic expression.
