Description:
In-depth study of ethics and issues surrounding big data and scientific technology in the contemporary world. Recognition of potential ethical bias and abuse of data across a multitude of platforms.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify ethical issues associated with applications of data science in a variety of professional settings
  • Recognize potential bias in data and scientific technology as it relates to areas such as gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, etc.
  • Assess and critique the actions of individuals, corporations, governments and other organizations as ethical or unethical
  • Apply general ethical principles to the specific, concrete actions of individuals, corporations, governments and other organizations
  • Formulate sound, well-reasoned arguments, and communicate them clearly
  • Generate a case study of their own
