MATH 152 - Functions and Reasoning Description: Develops precalculus readiness through increased understanding of algebraic concepts and skills by exploring: real number algebra; rates of change; manipulation of quantities represented symbolically, graphically, and in words; and linear and quadratic relationships to function.
Prerequisites: Prerequisites: satisfactory score on math placement exam or completion of MATH 100B with a C or higher.
Credits: (5)
Learner Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Create, use and interpret linear and quadratic functions in symbolic, tabular, graphical, and verbal/written representations and proficiently switch between representations.
- Represent mathematical situations using multiple representations including graphs, tables, equations, and diagrams.
- Use mathematical reasoning to evaluate situations, select problem-solving strategies, draw logical conclusions, develop and describe solutions, and recognize how those solutions can be applied.
- Apply critical thinking and data analysis skills to reflect on solutions to problems, to determine the appropriateness of known solutions, and to critique the quality or reasonableness of solutions.
- Increase flexibility with symbolic problem solving including translating problems into algebraic representations, understanding mathematical properties, recognizing important underlying principles, and applying necessary skills.
