Mathematics Major, BS (Small Plan)

The small plan major is intended primarily for students completing a double major. Students wishing to double major in data science and the mathematics major (small plan) may not use courses required for the data science major to fulfill the 8 credit math elective requirement in the small math plan. (Data science courses may be used to fulfill the applications of math elective requirement.)
Admission Requirements for Mathematics Major and Minor
Admission to any major in the mathematics department will be considered after the first two quarters of calculus are taken (MATH 172 and MATH 173). Transfer students with the calculus background will generally take and successfully complete (2.0 or higher) 10 hours of math beyond calculus to be admitted to a major. Application forms are available from the mathematics department office. Students must meet with an advisor in the mathematics department before being considered for major or minor.
Program Requirements
Students must earn a minimum grade of C in any course that fulfills a major or minor requirement.
Program Learner Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Write proofs using contrapositive, contradiction, cases, and mathematical induction.
- Apply calculus and linear algebra to standard applications.
- Evaluate different techniques and tools for mathematical problems.
- Communicate mathematical information correctly and in an audience-appropriate manner.
