Admission Requirements for Mathematics Major and Minor
Admission to any major in the mathematics department will be considered after the first two quarters of calculus are taken (MATH 172 and MATH 173). Transfer students with the calculus background will generally take and successfully complete (2.0 or higher) 10 hours of math beyond calculus to be admitted to a major. Application forms are available from the mathematics department office. Students must meet with an advisor in the mathematics department before being considered for major or minor.

Program Requirements
Students must earn a minimum grade of C in any course that fulfills a major or minor requirement.

Students wishing to double major in data science and the large math plan may not use MATH 499D to satisfy the electives requirement in the large plan major. (Other data science courses can be used towards the 20 credit math electives requirement in the large plan.)

Program Learner Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Write proofs using contrapositive, contradiction, cases, and mathematical induction.
  • Apply calculus, linear algebra, and/or statistics to standard applications.
  • Evaluate different techniques and tools for mathematical problems.
  • Communicate mathematical information correctly and in an audience-appropriate manner.
