Students will receive an introduction to writing and reporting of journalistic stories for online and print media.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the variety of ways newsrooms structure their coverage and deploy their staff.
  • Write news stories with effective leads, nut graphs and story structure.
  • Find ideas for news stories.
  • Interview sources.
  • Use observation to gather information.
  • Collect appropriate documents to inform news stories.
  • Identify the qualities and values that make events and trends newsworthy and the factors that determine the “play” of a story in a media outlet.
  • Summarize the ethical standards and guidelines set by professional news organizations.
