ASP 452 - Media Representations of Disability


Description:
Analyze the representation of personal ability and appearance in various media and its influence on identity, culture, and careers. ASP 452, COM 452, ASP 552, COM 552 are cross-listed/ layered courses; a student may only receive credit for one.

Prerequisites:
Prerequisite: successful completion of an Academic Writing I (AWI) course.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify issues of accessibility regarding identity and functions of independent and integrated living.
  • Use theory and research to analyze representation of disability.
  • Identify the use of disability for different narrative purposes in a variety of fiction and nonfiction media products.
  • Recognize patterns of representation across a variety of media.
  • Explain disability as a cultural identity subject to marginalization.
  • Summarize literature on topics of media portrayals of disability.
