HIST 478 - Russian Far East Description: Russian Far East history from 16th century Cossack exploration to 21st century democracy. Topics include the imperial “urge to the sea,” the Trans-Siberian Railway, the Soviet gulag system, and Pacific Rim relations. HIST 478 and HIST 578 are layered courses; a student may not receive credit for both.

Learner Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify key events, persons, and places in Russian Asian history.
- Isolate and analyze significant issues in Russian Asian history.
- Critically analyze primary and secondary sources.

- Give examples of the relationship between the past and contemporary events and problems.
