EDLT 411 - Teaching Comprehension

Comprehension strategies and techniques; techniques for vocabulary development.

Prerequisite: ELEM 331.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student/teacher candidate will be able to:

  • State the importance of qualitative and quanatitative reading research, the history of the teaching of reading and best practices of reading instruction
  • State the nature of reading comprehension and factors that affect a reader’s comprehension.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of how culture, language, dialect, and ethnic diversity among learners can positively influence comprehension development.
  • State the importance of assessing and evaluating student’s comprehension and how the information gathered affects planning for instruction to meet student needs.
  • Develop a repertoire of instructional strategies to promote and teach comprehension skills with a variety of learners/texts.
  • Identify and use technology appropriately as related to comprehension
  • State how vocabulary development impacts comprehension
