This course explores the historical experiences and impacts of children and youth in modern Africa. HIST 459 and HIST 559 are layered courses; students may not receive credit for both.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Demonstrate understanding of key principles of the history of childhood
Distinguish how children and youth experience and impact historical dynamics
Analyze primary and secondary sources
Explain how children and youth created and reflected different cultural norms and practices in Africa
Graduate level: Demonstrate understanding of the historiography of the field, identifying key questions and methods in the literature on children and youth in Africa
