HPE 555 - Elementary Education Methods III: Physical Education and Health Description: Integrates strategies and activities for incorporating physical education and health into an elementary school setting. Introduces concepts and skills for promoting physical literacy, healthy active lifestyles, and safety procedures for physical activity settings.

Learner Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Analyze stages of motor development for Laban’s framework and the Skill Theme Approach
- Demonstrate knowledge for instructional cues, prompts, physical activities and feedback to facilitate the development of basic motor skills, rhythms, and fitness within the elementary classroom.
- Identify proper risk strategies, safety precautions, supervision, and legal issues relevant to children involved in different settings (i.e., recess, physical activity breaks, gymnasium, playground, field).
- Demonstrate basic awareness of sensory needs, appropriate integration, and modifications as needed in basic motor skills and physical fitness.
- Utilize online and other resources for adapting curriculum to individual students needs in Physical Education and health.
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of the Washington Health and Physical Education state learning standards.
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of the prevention and management of common illnesses, diseases, and personal safety.
- Demonstrate an understanding of cultural competence in a comprehensive physical education and health program.
- Identify procedures to foster a classroom environment plan which enhances the physical and emotional health of children in the elementary classroom.
