HPE 550 - Research Methods and Statistics in Sport and Movement Studies Description: Introduction to the process of planning and understanding research and the application of statistics to research in sport and movement studies. Analysis of data sets drawn from research in these disciplines. Permission of instructor.

Learner Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding of scientific and non- scientific problem-solving methods, as well as the key characteristics of different types of research approaches.
- Demonstrate ability to conceptualize, plan and present a research proposal.
- Distinguish the differences between descriptive and inferential statistics.
- Assess the relationship between central tendency, variance, standard deviation, and normal distributions in data sets.
- Plan and carry out analyses for the following: (A) descriptive data; (B) differences among and between groups; and (C) relationships among and between variables.
- Conduct hypothesis testing and explain its relationship with the principles and axioms of probability.
