EDU 543 - Culturally Responsive Elementary Literacy Methods


Description:
Critical theory, history, research, and standards of reading and writing literacy instruction in heterogeneous elementary classroom settings. Differentiating literacy techniques to effectively accomplish learning goals for elementary students’ diverse learning backgrounds and needs.

Prerequisites:
Prerequisites: must be accepted in the Teacher Certification MAT Program. Co-Requisites: EDU 503 and EDU 563 and EDU 573 and EDU 583.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Assess current issues, principles, policies, and practices in elementary reading and writing literacy theories for the diverse classroom employing professional vocabulary
  • Construct and model inclusive elementary literacy reading and writing instructional strategies and methods based on current research
  • Demonstrate knowledge of appropriate literacy teaching strategies for modifying instructional methods based on socioeconomic, emotional, culture, language, dialect, motivation, behavior, cognition, and ethnic diversity factors
  • Identify a range of elementary literacy teaching strategies to meet diverse student learning needs in an inclusive classroom
  • Document current best practices, curriculum standards, teaching plans, parent conferences, discipline logs, and other school experiences
  • Analyze how various literacy methods promote and support student competencies in the inclusive classroom.
  • Devise a family communication plan using current laws, regulations, and policies as they apply to literacy services to students with diverse learning needs.
  • Generate a plan of action to collect evidence related to long- term literacy assessments based on student data that demonstrates student progress over time
  • Interpret assessment results to inform literacy instruction, including use of student data, targets, developmental stages, literacy levels, literacy components, and cultural and linguistic backgrounds
  • Participate as a member of a professional learning community in order to reflect and improve upon instructional practices for the teaching of elementary reading and writing.
