EDU 542 - Social Studies Methods for an Evolving Democracy


Description:
Social Studies teaching methodologies for heterogeneous classroom settings. Differentiating instructional techniques to effectively accomplish specific learning goals for students’ diverse learning backgrounds and needs in the elementary social studies classroom.

Prerequisites:
Prerequisites: must be accepted in the Teacher Certification MAT Program. Co-Requisites: EDSE 502 and EDU 572 and EDU 582.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Analyze current research for elementary social studies classroom employing professional vocabulary.
  • Construct arguments with evidence.
  • Assess critical attributes of key concepts used in teaching elementary social studies.
  • Evaluate a contemporary civic engagement event (e.g., school board meeting, county commissioner meeting, policy report, etc.)
  • Create elementary social studies activities and resources that enhance an inclusive age and grade-appropriate classroom.
