HIST 584 - Gender and History in Modern Asia


Description:
Examining historical constructions of gender and sexuality in Asia since the 19th century, this course traces how these constructions vary over time and space and carry implications for societies’ ideas of beauty, power, and pleasure. HIST 484 and HIST 584 are layered courses, students may not receive credit for both.

Prerequisites:
Prerequisite: graduate standing or instructor permission.

Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Examine and Evaluate ideas and arguments concerning historical construction of gender and sexualities in modern Asia
  • Analyze and synthesize various types of primary and secondary sources in order to put forward well-supported arguments in the fields of Asian Studies as well as History
  • Compose clearly written and clearly presented arguments, including a thesis and sufficient and well-used supporting evidence
  • Outline and summarize key events, persons, and concepts in modern Asian history concerning gender
  • Explain the complex relationship between modernization movements and gendered politics in Asia
  • Inspect and organize various interpretations of and approaches to gender and history in Modern Asia, and assess the strengths and weaknesses of these approaches used by historians in the field (HIST 584)
