GPD 553 - Exceptional Learners in the Secondary Classroom (Special Education) Description: Legal and ethical requirements for educating exceptional learners; identification, referral, and placement procedures; development and use of the IEP; strategies for teaching and evaluating; and managing the academic/social behaviors of exceptional and other at-risk learners. Learner Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

- Explain and demonstrate knowledge of development and characteristics of learners.
- Explain and provide for individual learning differences.
- Select, adapt, and implement a variety of instructional strategies.
- Design learning environments that promote positive social interactions.
- Use strategies to support and enhance communications skills.
- Sequence, implement and evaluate instruction.
- Plan, implement, and document assessments for individual learning needs
- Practice within the CEC Code of Ethics and other standards of the profession.
